CLERODENDRON INDICUM: A REPERTOIRE OF PHYTOCHEMICALS AND ITS ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY
Clerodendron indicum, a widely distributed plant in South East Asia, has been reported for its various therapeutic properties. The aim of our study was to determine the phytochemicals preset there in both qualitatively and quantitatively and their antioxidant potentials. The ethanolic extract (EE) and hydroethanolic extract (HE) of C. indicum have been studied by preliminary phytochemical analysis, HPTLC and HPLC system. Assessment of antioxidant properties was done by hydroxyl radical scavenging assay, DPPH radical scavenging assay, super oxide radical scavenging assay and reductive ability assay using standard methods. HPTLC and HPLC study of the both the extracts showed the presence of quercetin. However quercetin of EE was higher than HE. Likewise, antioxidant activity of the HE extract was also inferior to EE. EE extract conferred significant antioxidant activity and higher flavonoid content than HE.
